Nintendo Direct Mini Games News Roundup – January 11th 2018

Yesterday, Nintendo trolled their fanbase after Gamestop slipped up and announced that Nintendo would be having a Nintendo Direct. Well, after yesterdays teasing, Nintendo have launched their Nintendo Direct Mini with plenty of games and updates for the Nintendo Switch.

Yesterday Nintendo decided to have some fun with their community. Teasing them about a Nintendo Direct that ended up not happening yesterday as Gamestop had predicted. Well, now that today is here, Nintendo have released the above trailer with lots of goodies and games to look forward to on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. So let’s jump right in shall we?

New Games

The World Ends With You -Final Remix-

That’s right, 10 years after the original launch on the Nintendo DS, The World Ends With You is coming to the Nintendo Switch with some enhancements and extras. The game is keeping the traditional touch controls for those who’d like to play the game the way it was intended, but also adding in JoyCon controls for a new style. It will also include an entirely new, and apparently sizeable scenario that gets “to the heart of the story”.

No official release date has been given, but as we said above, it will release sometime this year.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition

Hyrule Warriors originally released on the WiiU and was the first of the Dynasty Warriors style games branching out into other properties. It stars Link against massive hoards of enemies. This new version combines the WiiU and 3DS versions into one and brings us new goodies to enjoy. New characters, new outfits, all the levels and content from the WiiU and 3DS versions of the game, and all the previously released DLC. The Definitive Edition will release Spring 2018.

Mario Tennis Aces

Mario Tennis has been around for a long time, and for the first time since the GBA days, Mario Tennis Aces will feature an all new Story Mode. New graphics, gameplay mechanics, and stokes will keep you on your toes against your foes. The story mode will feature a variety of missions, challenges, boss battles, and more. Mario Tennis Aces will release Spring 2018.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

Ys is a long-running franchise that features hero Adol and friends out to save the world. Featuring hack and slash RPG combat, an evolving home base, and plenty to explore and discover. The game originally released on the PS Vita and PS4 back in September, and will make its way to the Nintendo Switch this Summer.

SNK HEROINES Tag Team Frenzy

As the title suggests, this is a new fighting game that features the Heroines from the SNK franchises in 2v2 battles. The game will feature a one button fighting method where you can set off devastating moves with unique and timed button presses. Bucking the trope of defeating your foes by simply draining their HP, you need to get them into a “tough spot” and complete your work with a “Dream Finish”. The game will also let you customize the girls for your own unique look during battles. The game will release this Summer.

ACA NeoGeo Art of Fighting 2

As the title suggests, this was originally a NeoGeo title way back in 1994. This game will release today on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Another WiiU port is coming to the Nintendo Switch, this time, it’s DK. With all of the previous content remastered in 1080p, with a new character, “Funky Kong”. His special surfboard gives him all sorts of unique abilities to tackle each level. From hovering to infinite rolls, no obstacle is too difficult for him. The game will also feature co-op and will release May 4th.

Dark Souls: Remastered

The long-rumored Dark Souls: Remastered is finally official and is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Other than the announcement nothing was revealed about the game. It came via a teaser trailer at the end of the Nintendo Direct Mini, and ended with a release date of May 25th.

Additional Content

Pokken Tournament DX DLC

Pokken Tournament is getting additional Pokemon for players to control and test their might with, starting with Aegislash. Him, along with other support Pokemon will be available in the first of 2 DLC packs releasing on January 31st. The second will release March 23rd and will include Blastoise and 2 additional support Pokemon.

The Battlepack will also include avatar items and more.

Super Mario Odyssey: Luigi’s Balloon World

This is a new, free content update for those who have played and beaten the game’s story. All you need to do is find Luigi in each world and choose one of two competitive modes. The first is “Hide It” in where you have 30 seconds to hide a ballon somewhere in the world, and “Find it”, where you do the opposite.

It’s somewhat of a speed-run mode, and for those who do well on either mode will move up in the ranks on the leaderboard. They didn’t say whether or not there would be some sort of rewards for completing these, but they did say the free update will also include new outfits and filters for the Photo Mode. The update will release next month.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

This new DLC for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle features new characters, and a new story starring Donkey Kong, Mario’s oldest Frenemy. Not much was shown, but taking place in a new world with new story content is enough. The DLC pack will release Spring 2018.

Game Updates

Kirby Star Allies

Kirby Star Allies is a new Kirby game that was originally announced back at E3 under a generic name of Kirby. The game will feature new “Copy Abilities” that give Kirby an edge against his foes, as well as 4 play Co-op action. Boasting a new Artist and Spider abilities, as well as allowing you to mix and match the abilities with your friends for extra power. Kirby Star Allies will release on March 16th.

Payday 2

Payday 2 was originally announced for the Console Hybrid, but now we have more information. The game will feature a timed exclusive new character. The new Heister sets herself apart with a new LED mask, unique weapons, and hacker perks. Payday 2 releases on Nintendo Switch February 27th.

Nothing really new was announced about this upcoming EA Original title other than that it will be releasing February 16th.

New footage for this Indie was released, showing us the 8-bit style of graphics. The action platformer will feature an “Assist Mode” that allows you to adjust game settings like how fast time moves, all the way up to a God Mode so those with less skill can still enjoy the game. Celeste will release January 25th.

Game Demos

Kirby: Battle Royale

Not much was said about this one other than to remind users that you can play the demo for this game on 3DS.

Dragon Quest Builders

The same goes for this one, however this one was launched today. It is a Minecraft style game set in the Dragon Quest universe that has more structure to it. If you haven’t played it, it’s worth checking out.

So there we have it, no warning (other than yesterday’s snafu) and plenty to talk about. From new games to ports and even Demos. The Nintendo Switch already had plenty of games coming to it, and with these new announcements Nintendo fans have even more to keep them busy at home, or on the go.
